Hurricane Smoke Ventilator

The Hurricane Smoke ventilator is purpose designed to withstand
high temperatures and smoke production caused by building fires.
The Huricane HR utilises high temperature polymers as well
as a stainless steel shaft to enable the vent to withstand
temperatures in excess of 200 degrees for 120 minutes,
and 300 degrees for a further 30 minutes.

Fire rated ventilator
  • acts as a turbine ventilator and a smoke relief ventilator
  • Instant exhaust of smoke in the event of a fire - no waiting for fusible links to trip
  • Increasing exhaust rates as a fire progresses due to higher stack pressures
Marine-grade aluminum construction -
provides total corrosion resistance in harsh environments
Unique bearing system -
quality manufactured double row heavy duty ball bearing system
that is secured into a high temperature rated holder ensures the
Hurricane will not stop rotating
Aesthetic appearance - modem, stylised Hurricane design compliments any building. Available in a range of popular roofing colours to meet architectural requirements
Vertical vane design- new generation Hurricane vertical air vanes are unique and provide distinct benefits over spherical rotary ventilators including:

  • greater protection against driving rain
  • larger exhaust opening enables increased air capacities
  • increased vane area to drive and rotate the Hurricane
  • lower starting torque means the Hurricane will even rotate and exhaust in the absence of wind
using thermal currents developed within the building

Calibrated exhaust capacities
- all Hurricane sizes are calibrated to ensure a pre-determined number of air changes an hour can be provided through a building.
Tested and proven weather performance - independently tested to withstand a continuous gusting wind speed of 240km/hr without damage, and passed the International Dynamic Rain Test without any water penetration.
Vari-pitch base - allows the "Hurricane" to be easily mounted on any roof slope up to 45 degrees. A ridge mounting base is also available where necessary.
Guaranteed quality - the Hurricane has an extensive warranty against mechanical failure

Optional Accesssories

Dampers - manual, electric or pneumatic to regulate the air flow as required on hot summer days or cold winter days

Fresh Air Inlets

All natural ventilation systems require an adequate fresh air inlet to function at their rated capacity. Fresh air inlets should be located as close to the floor level as possible and have a free inlet area of a minimum of one-and- a-half times the throat area of the Ellflow ventilator. Ellflow manufacture a full range of fresh air inlet louvres for this purpose.

Worked Example

Refer also to the Ellflow Technical Design Guide.

1. A factory vvorkshop is 25 metres wide x 30 metres long x 8.5 metres high. The desired number of air changes per hour through this type of building is 5.
2. Using the Air Change Method formula, the total exhaust rate (Q) is: Q = (25m W x 30m L x 8.5m H) x 5 Air Changes / 3600 Seconds Per Hour = 8.854m2/s
3. Using the exhaust capacity table, select the number of Hurricane Rotary Ventilators required:
N = 8.854m/ s / 8 Ventilators = =1.106m2/S. At an average wind speed of 12km/hr a Hurricane Rotary Ventilator of ó00mm throat size approximately meets exhaust rate requirements.
4. Therefore, a total number of 8 Ellflow Hurricane Rotary Model HRV600 Ventilators should be specified.
5. A suitable Ellflow fresh air inlet louvre should also be selected. To determine the correct size refer to the appropriate Ellflow Louvre Performance Chart and follovv the example on that sheet.
